Back in May my friend and fellow photographer Jayne Furman asked me if I was interested in teaming up with her to photograph the CMY5k Promotional Photo Shoot for a new race that was soon to be a big success. So I jumped at the chance and it was lots of fun. Jayne is a great photographer and easy to work with, she and I have worked on a few projects in the past. So after hearing what the client wanted we came up with a plan of attack. Then we waited for all the materials to arrive. The CMY5k is a 5k race that takes place in multiple cities around the U.S. and is full on dirty in the best possible way. The race features 4 color stations around the course where the runners get covered in vibrant colored corn starch. If that wasn’t enough, every runner is given a bag of color and they throw the color as they wish. So while they are running the color keeps adding on and the runners keep getting more and more colorful. So our job was to photograph the logo using the colored powder and to capture runners getting covered so the race company could promote the race.
We photographed the logo at my studio and I must say that I don’t recommend using colored corn starch in an area that you wish to keep clean. That powder goes everywhere and in a hurry. We photographed the logo on multiple colored background and multiple textures. We even photographed the reverse image of the template with solid backgrounds. It was difficult to work with, however it was a learning experience that was worth the effort.
A few days after finishing the logo images we photographed the runners. The runners were volunteers and I am not sure they new what they signed up to volunteer for. The girls were UNLV cheerleaders, I’m not sure where the guys were from. I am sure that someone said “There will be UNLV Cheerleaders at this event” and viola, we had several male volunteers. No matter what brought all these people there, they had a great time and you can tell when you see the smiles in the photos. These kids were young beautiful people that were having a great time and that is exactly what we wanted to capture.
